An on-demand tractor and mechanization service that allows farmers to get access to available and affordable farm power, no matter which village they are in, with just a feature phone. Call us, The Uber For Tractor, with the last mile approach!
TROTRO Tractor Limited is an agricultural technology (AgriTech) startup based in Accra, Ghana. Founded in 2016 by Nana Kwame Darko, Adam Muhammed Muhideen, and Emmanuel Ansah Amprofi, the company was initially backed by seed funding from the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC). It was established to solve a critical deficit in African agriculture: the lack of accessible, affordable, and timely mechanization for smallholder farmers.
Core Platform & Technology Operating on an on-demand, sharing-economy model often described as the "Uber for tractors," TROTRO Tractor bridges the gap between equipment owners and farmers who need their services. The platform leverages a blend of accessible communication and advanced tracking technologies:
Farmer Accessibility (SMS/USSD): Recognizing that many rural farmers lack internet access or smartphones, the platform allows farmers to request, schedule, and prepay for ploughing and mechanization services using simple feature phones via a dedicated SMS shortcode.
Tractor Owner Management (IoT & GPS): For tractor owners and mechanization centers, the company provides specialized GPS trackers, a USSD app, and a mobile app. This Internet of Things (IoT) integration allows owners to monitor their machinery's location, operational efficiency, and work progress remotely, thereby preventing misuse and reducing idle equipment time.
In Ghana, the deficit of available agricultural machinery severely limits crop yields, with a large percentage of farmers unable to easily practice mechanization. TROTRO Tractor addresses this by maximizing the utilization rate of existing tractors. By bringing transparency, accountability, and efficiency to the agricultural value chain, the startup empowers smallholder farmers to increase their acreage and productivity, while ensuring equipment owners see a better return on their investments. Since its inception, the company has grown its footprint, expanding operations beyond Ghana into other African markets such as Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Togo
